You are typically granted, at most, two weeks of leave at a time, twice a year. It’s all conditional on the needs of the Navy (the mission). While being transferred to another ship or duty station, you could take 30 days of leave.
What do sailors do on their free time?
Having spent a lot of time on many Navy ships the sailors have many ways to amuse themselves. Movies, lots of movies. Steel beach picnics or cook outs, Saturday pizza nights where officers, CPO’s or enlisted would take turns making dozens of pizzas for the crew.
Normally ships will go to sea for 10 days to 2 weeks each month for training operations in preparation for deployment. Extended operations away from home port can last up to 6 to 9 months, and ships typically deploy once every 18-24 months.
How long is a work day in the navy?
9.5 hours per day with alternate Fridays off. You work on average 10-12 hours on watch and when you’re not on watch you could work a regular 8 hour day. it all depends on your job in the Navy. In port anywhere from 9-12 hours a day, underway 15-16 hours a day but it goes by fast.
Aboard the ship, you’ll have a near monotonous lifestyle filled with stress, anger, disappointment, and a lot of strange events that just become a regular part of your day. You’ll learn to live with people who you’ll come to hate and others that you’ll tolerate.
What are people in the Navy called?

Almost all positions in the Navy rotate between shore and ship duty. When you are assigned to ship duty you deploy a few times a year. In a four year period you will usually do a couple of PACs (West Pac, etc..) which are larger 6 month deployments and smaller deployments for excersizes, etc…
What do you do in your free time on a ship?
When free time is found, available pasttimes are also dependent on your job and vessel. A lot of people bring laptops to watch movies and play video games, read books, play card games, really, anything that can fit in a small space. (Even smaller for submariners).

Can you do laundry on a US Navy submarine?
Yes, you can do laundry (on a submarine you do your own, on a surface ship you send your laundry to the ship’s laundry. Yes, you must always be in uniform, unless you’re on your way for liberty, when you can be in civilian clothes. An ordinary sailor can not do laundry on the ship in the ships laundry.
