What is Bharatmala and Sagarmala project?

The Sagarmala Programme ( transl. garland of the sea) is an initiative by the government of India to enhance the performance of the country’s logistics sector. Sagarmala aims to modernize India’s Ports, so that port-led development can be augmented and coastlines can be developed to contribute to India’s growth.

When will Bharatmala Phase-I be completed?

Award of the Phase-I of Bharatmala is expected to be complete by fiscal 2023. The first phase of Bharatmala approved in 2017 includes construction of 24,800 km of national highways, in addition to 10,000 km of balance road works under the national highways development programme.

What is the cost of Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase I?

In addition, Bharatmala Pariyojana phase -I also includes 10,000 kms of balance road works under NHDP, taking the total to 34,800 kms at an estimated cost of Rs.5,35,000 crore. Bharatmala Phase I – is to be implemented over a five years period of i.e. 2017-18 to 2021-22.

What is the Bharatmala project in India?

The project aims to construct multiple roads and for the proper execution of the project, the Ministry has decided to divide the project into various categories for proper construction of the roads. The Bharatmala project was announced in 2017 and was targetted to get completed by 2022.

Thus, the government will have to depend on other sources for generating adequate money to meet the expenses. A total of around 24,800 kms are being considered in Phase I of Bharatmala.
