Do cousins count legacy?
A legacy is someone who is related to an alumnus of a school—usually a child of a graduate. More distant relations (such as aunts, uncles, and cousins) rarely count. Basically, if one or both of your parents graduated from a school, you would be considered a legacy there.
Does MIT have sibling legacy?

Does Brother count as legacy?
Some schools only consider parents when assessing legacy status, while others consider grandparents or siblings. Legacy typically is associated with preferential treatment by an admissions office. Aunts, uncles, cousins and distant relatives do not count.
Why do college applications ask about siblings?
Siblings’ Education As with your parents, this information is gathered for demographic purposes. If you have an older sibling you attended a college to which you’re applying, this may also provide a hook in the admissions process, giving you a slight boost.
Why does common app ask about family education?
Since they are looking for a diverse freshman class, they want to know the percentage of their students whose parents attended college, as well as the general background of the incoming class. This information also offers greater insight into students’ applications.

What is MIT doing to encourage young people to apply?
Most importantly, we try to encourage young people to be students and community members first, and applicants second. The first-year application is now available in the MIT application portal. The transfer application is closed. Please check back at the end of August for updates.
What are some good examples of MIT spirit?
Lobbying a senator to amend bad policy changes the world. There are thousands of examples. The core of the MIT spirit is collaboration and cooperation; you can see it all over the Institute. Many of the problem sets (our affectionate term for homework) at MIT are designed to be worked on in groups, and cross-department labs are very common.

If what you need to tell us simply won’t fit, please email us and explain what you weren’t able to fit in the application, referencing the application piece (Part 1 or 2) and the relevant question. Be sure to clearly indicate your name (last name and first name) and date of birth, so that your email can be filed with your application.
