What is a quad in Modelling?

Quad modeling is simply the practice of modeling faces that have 4 edges and 4 vertices. In this article, I’ll attempt to explain why you might want to do that, and introduce you to some plugins that can help you work with quads.

What’s An Ngon blender?

An ngon is simply a face with more than 4 edges. Let me illustrate. Let’s say you have a object like this: And you wanted to cut one of the faces in half like this: Well, everything looks normal, but in reality you just created an nGon ( two actually ).

What are triangles in 3D?

When modeling in 3D with polygons, it is important to construct all of your models using quads and triangles. A triangular polygon is referred to as a tri or triangle, and is a simple three-sided polygon. It has exactly 3 vertices at its corners and 3 edges connecting those points.

What are quads and tris?

What are Triangles Quads and Ngons. Triangles: Or usually referred to as Tris for short is a single poly that consists of 3 vertices with edges connecting them. This is the smallest possible polygon you can make. Quads: As you would expect consists of 4 vertices with edges connecting them.

What is a Ngon?

An ngon is a face or polygon that is made up of five or more sides or edges connected by five or more vertices. Anything over a quad (4 sides) is considered an ngon.

Are tris or quads better?

Quads. The answer is simple and it ends right there. It doesn’t depend on any factors, and modeling with triangles is almost never better. Even if you are exporting your model to a game engine (which will require conversion to triangles), it is almost always better to model with quads.

Why is Ngon bad?

Ngons and triangles both cause issues when trying to smooth a model. The extra vertices and edges can cause some very strange bumpiness in the model that would otherwise not occur if the model was made up of quads.

Are NGons always bad?

Ngons or quads, having enough polygons to allow deformation (and an even distribution of polygons for that matter) is always a good practice. Even distribution of polygons is a good modeling practice.

What Is An Ngon?

What is a vertices on a 3D shape?

Vertices. A vertex is a corner where edges meet. The plural is vertices. For example a cube has eight vertices, a cone has one vertex and a sphere has none.

Are quads better than Tris?

What is a Ngon shape?

Ngon: This is a shape that has more than 4 vertices. There is no limit to the number of points or sides an Ngon can have. 3d modelling can be a very technical task and there are a lot of methods that can be used to achieve the same result, as such there are a wide array of solutions to the same problems.

What are ngons and why are they bad for my model?

Ngons are claimed to not only look glitchy, but also result in all sorts of mesh editing problems. They disrupt the edge flow of your model and make standard modeling operations like extrusion less effective because we can’t use subdivision surfaces.

How many sides can an Ngon have?

There is no limit to the number of points or sides an Ngon can have. 3d modelling can be a very technical task and there are a lot of methods that can be used to achieve the same result, as such there are a wide array of solutions to the same problems. This is one reason why there is much debate as to which method is correct.

What is the point of ngons in Unity?

This is purely a modeling feature though, at the end of the day, Unity will convert your object to triangles, like this. This is why working in quads is always so handy, they convert to triangles in a very predictable way. Working in ngons is incredibly handy, allowing you to model detail only where you need it.
