Was Rashid Nezhmetdinov a GM?

Rashid Nezhmetdinov, aka “Super Nezh”, was clearly GM strength, having a plus score in the 20 games he played against World Champions, including a plus score against his friend, Tal. He was also a five-time Russian champion (this title predates the Soviet Union, and is not the same as champion of the Soviet Union).

Rashid Gibiatovich Nezhmetdinov ( Tatar: Рәшит Һибәт улы Нәҗметдинов, [ræˈʃit næʑmetˈdinəf] Russian: Рашид Гибятович Нежметдинов; December 15, 1912 – June 3, 1974) was an eminent Soviet chess player, chess writer, and checkers player.

How did Nezhmetdinov learn to play chess?

The orphaned, impoverished family moved to Kazan, Tatar ASSR . Nezhmetdinov had a natural talent for both chess and checkers. He learned chess by watching others play at a chess club, whereupon he challenged one of the players, won, and then challenged another player, winning that game as well.

Is Nezhmetdinov strong enough to be a GM?

During his peak years, Nezhmetdinov only managed to play outside of the Soviet Union one time, and he finished second to Korchnoi at Bucharest 1954, which again showed that he was strong enough to be a GM. Unfortunately, strength is not the only factor in getting a title.

Where was nenezhmetdinov born?

Nezhmetdinov was born in Aktubinsk, Russian Empire, in what is now Aktobe, Kazakhstan, in a Tatar family. His parents died when he was very young, leaving him and two other siblings to be raised by their brother.
