What is Snobol used for?

SNOBOL1. The initial SNOBOL language was created as a tool to be used by its authors to work with the symbolic manipulation of polynomials. It was written in assembly language for the IBM 7090. It had a simple syntax, only one datatype, the string, no functions, and no declarations and very little error control.

Why was COBOL so popular?

COBOL was the most advanced language of it’s day for doing business-oriented tasks. It’s popularity was largely because it was really the only game in town when banks and insurance companies computerized their operations.

Why is ALGOL important?

Block structure became a powerful tool for building large programs out of small components. ALGOL contributed a notation for describing the structure of a programming language, Backus–Naur Form, which in some variation became the standard tool for stating the syntax (grammar) of programming languages.

What are the advantages of ALGOL?

The biggest advantage of ALGOL (over preceding languages such as FORTRAN and COBOL is that it encourages the production of well structured programs. ALGOL’60 was intended as a reference and publication language as well as a language for writing programs to run on computers.

What is COBOL and why should I learn it?

COBOL is intuitive. It’s easy to learn because of its English-like structural components and it has been ported to virtually every hardware platform. It runs within modern IDEs – Visual Studio and Eclipse – so there’s no need to worry about learning a new toolset.

Which is more powerful Fortran or Algol?

For scientific and high performance computing Algol was considered, and possibly is still considered by some, to be a more powerful language than Fortran. For the same algorithm encoded in both languages and using the same data, which of the two languages executed programs the fastest?

Why is there a COBOL programming shortage?

This shortage can be attributed to COBOL programmers aging out of the industry. Fifty percent of respondents to the same Computerworld-survey claimed that their COBOL staff were forty-five years of age or older, and half of those respondents cited their COBOL staff as older than fifty-five.

How many COBOL programmers are there?

There are estimated to be over a million COBOL programmers in the world today. Most impressive perhaps, is that 200 times as many COBOL transactions take place each day than Google searches – a figure which puts the influence of Web 2.0 into stark perspective.
