What is iron loss in a transformer and how can it be reduced?

Iron loss is loss due to alternating magnetic flux in the core of the transformer. It can be reduced by using magnetic material which has low hysteresis loss and by having a laminated core.

How can the losses of transformer be minimized?

The primary and secondary windings of a transformer are usually made of low-resistance copper wire. To minimize the loss resulting from eddy currents, transformer cores are LAMINATED. Since the thin, insulated laminations do not provide an easy path for current, eddy-current losses are greatly reduced.

Iron loss or core loss (Pi) Iron loss in transformers is the combination of hysteresis loss (Ph) and eddy current loss (Pe). This type of loss mainly occurs in the magnetic core of the transformer, and depends on magnetic properties of core material.

(i) Hysteresis loss : This is due to the repeated magnetisation and demagnetisation of the iron core caused by the alternating input current. This can be minimised by using alloys like mumetal or silicon steel. (ii) Copper loss : Current flowing through the primary and secondary windings lead to Joule heating effect.

How can eddy current loss in a transformer be reduced?

Eddy current magnitude can be reduced by designing the core as a set of thin sheets or laminations, in parallel to the magnetic field. Each sheet must be insulated from its neighbours with a thin coating of varnish or oxide film. By laminating the core, the area of each section and hence the induced EMF is reduced.

Iron losses depends upon supply frequency, maximum flux density in the core, volume of the core,etc. As the supply frequency, volume for a transformer typically remains constant, so the iron losses of a transformer is constant.

How do we Reduce Hysteresis Losses? Hysteresis losses can be reduced by using material that has less area of the hysteresis loop. Hence, high grade or silica steel can be used for designing the core within a transformer because it has extremely less area of the hysteresis loop.

How do you fix copper loss?

Copper losses are due to the resistance of the wire in the primary and secondary windings and the current flowing through them. These losses can be reduced by using wire with large cross-sectional area in the manufacturing of the coils.

The hysteresis loss occurs because of the reversal of the magnetism. The eddy current loss is minimised by using the thin core of lamination. The silicon steel material is used for minimising the hysteresis loss.
