Introduced by Ducati in 2019, the holeshot device mechanically lowers the rear of the bike to reduce wheelying off the line and improve acceleration at the start of race.

What is rear holeshot device?

Holeshot devices are common in motocross, but there, they lock the front forks down, rather than up. The idea there is to keep the front lower to help prevent wheelies, making it easier to control the bike off the line. But Ducati’s device appears to do the opposite, lowering the rear, rather than the front.

When was the holeshot device invented?

2002
The idea of the device dates back several decades, but it didn’t make its mark in America until 2002, when it was first seen on the factory Yamaha bikes. “The concept goes way back,” says Eric Phipps of Works Connection, the Northern California aftermarket company that created the first off-the-shelf holeshot device.

What gear do you holeshot?

Usually first or second depending on the bike, start straight, and track conditions. Second gear is usually preferred as it is less likely to wheelie out of the gate, and you can stay in gear and on the throttle longer down the front straight eliminating the time it would take to shift from 1st to 2nd.

How do you get holeshot?

To get a holeshot in motocross, you need to keep an attack position and put your weight on the front wheel when the gate drops. This helps to prevent your bike from wheelieing or spinning out. The best way to perfect your launch technique is to practice with a Risk Racing Holeshot Motocross Gate.
