Does evolution strive for perfection?
With all these constraints, we cannot expect evolution to craft perfect organisms. Natural selection operates on a “better than” basis. We can see evidence for evolution in the subtle imperfections of the organisms it produces.
Why does evolution produce perfect organisms?
Most of these will die out, but some will spread throughout a population. Although the chance of neutral mutations spreading is very small, genetic drift is nevertheless a significant force, especially in small populations, because of the enormous number of genetic mutations in each generation.
Why evolution does not lead to perfectly adapted organisms?
Evolution is all about genetic variance in populations. The fact that variance exists makes that necessarily there is no notion of perfectly adapted for a population (or for a species) as not all individuals are the same! Evolution is a change in allele frequency over time.
Does evolution lead to progress?
Evolution does not always lead to more advanced species. Evolution is simply a description of the way change occurs in biological creatures over many generations in order to better exploit a certain environment. Evolution sometimes leads to progress, but it sometimes leads in the opposite direction.
Does evolution ensure that all organisms are perfectly adapted?
You don’t have to be perfectly adapted to survive, you just have to be as well adapted as your competitors. The apparent perfection of plants and animals may be more a reflection of our poor imaginations than of reality.
Is evolution just about survival?
Evolution and “survival of the fittest” are not the same thing. Evolution refers to the cumulative changes in a population or species through time. “Survival of the fittest” is a popular term that refers to the process of natural selection, a mechanism that drives evolutionary change.
