Why do we use molality rather than molarity?

Molality is the number of moles of solute per kilogram of solvent. Molarity is the number of moles of solute per liter of solution. In these situations, molality is the preferred method of expressing concentration because the mass of solute and solvent in a solution does not change.

What is the difference between molality and molarity which is better and why?

The term is generally used for solutions, where it predicts the amount of solute dissolved in a given solvent. The terms used to express the concentration of the solution are Molarity, molality, and normality….Normality.

Molarity Molality
Molarity has a unit of moles/litre. Molality has units of moles/kg.

Why is molarity the preferred measure of concentration and what can we use it for?

Molarity (M) indicates the number of moles of solute per liter of solution (moles/Liter) and is one of the most common units used to measure the concentration of a solution. Molarity can be used to calculate the volume of solvent or the amount of solute.

What is the difference between normality and molarity and molality?

Molarity ( ) is defined as the number of moles of solute per liter of solution. Molality ( ) is defined as the number of moles of solute per kilogram of solvent. Normality ( ) is defined as the number of equivalents per liter of solution.

Why molality is preferred over molality of a solution?

Molality is preferred over molality as molality takes mass of solution but molarity takes volume of solution which changes with change in temperature. Because molality is temperature independent whereas other concentration terms like molarity depend on volume of the solution with varies with temperature.

What is the difference between molarity and molality and which one is temperature dependent?

While molarity decreases with an increase in temperature, molality is independent of temperature. This happens because molality involves mass, which does not change with a change in temperature, while molarity involves volume, which is temperature dependent.

What is the advantage of using molarity?

The first advantage is that it’s easy and convenient to use because the solute may be measured in grams, converted into moles, and mixed with a volume. The second advantage is that the sum of the molar concentrations is the total molar concentration. This permits calculations of density and ionic strength.
