What is stadia method in surveying?

Definition of stadia : a surveying method for determination of distances and differences of elevation by means of a telescopic instrument having two horizontal lines through which the marks on a graduated rod are observed also : the instrument or rod.

The constant k = f/i is called the multiplying constant or stadia interval factor and the constant (f + d) =C is known as the additive constant of the tacheometer but the latter one is made zero by using an anallatic lens in the instrument.
