Why do Canada and the US have the same country code? International dialing was not established when the first telephone system and the North American Numbering Plan were established in Canada and the US. For this reason, all countries and territories under the NANP carry +1 as their country code.
Why is US +1 country code?

How did countries get their dialing code?
COUNTRY dialling codes were agreed in the early 1960s by the International Telecoms Union (a club of each country’s network providers). These were then further divided according to the capacity of each network, 33 for France, 44 for the UK, etc, and further still for smaller countries: 353 for Ireland, 354 for Iceland.

Why is there a plus in front of phone numbers?
The (+) in front of the phone number means that the number is listed in international dialling format. When the (+) is encountered during dialling, the appropriate country code is automatically added, if needed. It’s ignored when the call is not an international connection.
