Is it okay for puppies to have daytime naps while crate training them?

Should a puppy nap in his crate? Yes – your puppy should absolutely nap in his crate. The more often you put him in there when he is sleepy, the easier he will associate the crate with sleep and calmness. Young puppies take a lot of naps, so you will have plenty of opportunity to build this association.

Do you need a crate and a playpen?

Ideally, neither the crate nor the playpen is better than the other — they just have different purposes. A crate should be your dog’s designated space to relax and sleep (never a punishment!), while a playpen keeps her secure in a smaller area of your home.

Can I keep my puppy in a playpen during the day?

As resting is incredibly important for your puppy’s growth, it’s likely they’ll need several little sleeps throughout the day so you can use the playpen as a daytime alternative to their crate. Your puppy won’t need a puppy playpen forever, so don’t worry about it being a permanent feature in your home.

Can you crate a dog during the day and at night?

A good rule of thumb is that a dog can be crated overnight and for up to half the day, provided his social and physical needs are being met while not in the crate. Young puppies need more frequent naps and much more frequent opportunities to “do their business” than adults.

Tips for Helping Your Puppy Sleep at Night

  1. Make the crate inviting. Don’t buy an expensive dog bed for a new pup, because he’s likely to chew it up.
  2. Establish a bedtime routine.
  3. Keep his sleep area quiet and dim.
  4. Don’t give in at bedtime.
  5. Be prepared for interruptions.

Where should I keep my puppy during the day?

Mid-morning: The rest of the morning might be devoted to nap time, ideally in a dog crate or pen. Even if you’re home during the day, your puppy should spend time in a crate or pen; this will help him learn how to be alone when necessary.

Is a playpen good for a puppy?

Like a dog crate, they serve as a way to contain your dog. But unlike a crate, they give him plenty of space to move around and play. Dog playpens give your pup room to explore and play safely when you’re busy around the house. Pens are big enough to put food and water bowls in, as well as your puppy’s favorite toys.
