Is being gifted or talented considered a special need?

Are Gifted programs bad for kids?

Yes, gifted programs can be great for some kids, but the divide has unintentional and often toxic repercussions for those on both sides. It makes “average” kids feel like failures, and makes them think they’ll never be good enough. It’s time to change our thinking when it comes to the gifted program.

Is gifted a learning disability?

Students who are gifted and also have learning disabilities are those who possess an outstanding gift or talent and are capable of high performance, but who also have a learning disability that makes some aspect of academic achievement difficult. Some of these students are identified and their needs are met.

Is gifted an IEP?

A gifted student’s identified educational needs must be met through a plan called the Gifted IEP. It is designed to provide a meaningful educational benefit. An individualized educational plan must be developed to address unique educational needs to provide a FAPE – Free, Appropriate Public Education.

Approximately 6 percent of public school students are enrolled in gifted and talented programs, but many student populations are underrepresented, according to the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC).

How do schools determine gifted and talented?

Some schools administer IQ tests and offer gifted programs to students who score above a certain threshold. Most schools, however, use a combination of test scores, grades, and teacher observations to determine if a child should be placed in a gifted program.
