Why does NO2 not Dimerise?

Why does NO2 dimerise? NO2 contains odd number of valence electrons. It behaves as a typical odd molecule. On dimerisation, it is converted to stable N2O4 molecule with even number of electrons.

Why does no not form dimer?

In the NO molecule, there are 11 valence electrons having a set of 5 electrons of one spin and 6 electrons of the opposite spin. But in the dimerisation of NO, there is no gain of electrons because the bond order of 2 ½ remains the same in the dimer. Hence, the dimer is unstable relative to the monomer in case of NO.

Why does NO2 Dimerise to form N2O4?

In the NO2 molecule the nitrogen atom has a single unpaired electron. The molecule will tend to dimerise so that this unpaired electron can be paired with another to form the N2O4 molecule. NO2 molecule is an odd electron molecule and hence paramagnetic. Due to possession of odd electron, it is coloured.
