What is kVA motor code?

For motors less than ½ horsepower, the code letter on the nameplate represents the locked-rotor kVA. On larger motors, it identifies the locked-rotor kVA per horsepower.

What is kVA code letter?

NEMA code letters designate the classification of electrical motors by the ratio of locked rotor kVA per horsepower….Locked Rotor Design Code Letters.

NEMA Code Letter kVA/HP with Locked Rotor Approximate Mid-Range Value
A 0- 3.14 1.6
B 3.15 – 3.55 3.3
C 3.55 – 3.99 3.8
D 4.0 – 4.49 4.3

What does 1ph mean on a motor?

A single-phase supply connected to an alternating current electric motor does not produce a rotating magnetic field; single-phase motors need additional circuits for starting (capacitor start motor), and such motors are uncommon above 10 kW in rating.

What does code mean on electric motor?

Codes are defined in MG 1-10.37. 2 by a series of letters from A to V. Generally, the farther the code letter from A, the higher the inrush current per hp. A replacement motor with a “higher” code may require different upstream electrical equipment, such as motor starters.

How is KVA code calculated?

Here is the tabulation of those code letters and kVA per horsepower values….Locked rotor KVA per Horsepower.

Letter designation (KVA/HP) Minimum (KVA/HP) Maximum
A 1 3.14
B 3.15 3.54
C 3.55 3.99
D 4 4.49

What is the starting code letter for this motor?

Indicating locked rotor code letters for electrical motors

NEMA Code Letter KVA/HP with locked rotor Approximate Mid-Range Value
G 5.6-6.29 5.9
H 6.3-7.09 6.7
J 7.1-7.99 7.5
K 8.0-8.99 8.5

What does SPL mean for HP?

The marking “SPL” is a trick some manufacturer’s like A.O.Smith use on their homeowner-grade air compressor motors. They’ll advertise these as 5 horse air compressors, but that’s “peak horsepower”. The real horsepower is less than 5, so they put “SPL” in the horsepower spot on the dataplate for “SPeciaL”.

How do you calculate kVA lock rotor?

To find LRA and starting kVA enter nominal operation voltage (such as 120 or 240), HP value, code letter from the nameplate label, and hit “Calculate” button. The general equation for single-phase devices is the following: LRA=1000*(kVA/HP)/Voltage. Note that this defines starting current at full nominal voltage.

How do you convert kVA to HP on a calculator?

kVA to hp Conversion Formula: Real power P(HP) is equal to the 1.34 times of apparent power S(kVA) in kVA and power factor. Hence for converting kVA to HP, P(HP) = 1.34 x S(kVA) x pf.

How do you calculate HP to LRA?

LRA (lock rotor amps) can be converted to HP using this formula: (LRA Watts x Volts)/ 746 Watts = Horsepower. You can also use the BTUh. For example, 18,000 BTUh equals 2 HP or 24,000 2.5 HP.
