Why is the flotation process important?

Froth flotation is an important concentration process that selectively separates hydrophobic valuable minerals from hydrophilic waste gangue. The minerals and metals (i.e., hydrophobic particles) attach to the air bubbles, which rise to the surface.

What is the importance of using flotation reagents in froth flotation process?

Froth flotation is the most widely used industrial process for the separation of finely liberated minerals. The process involves the aeration of minerals in water in the presence of flotation reagents which facilitate the attachment of air bubbles to and levitation of select minerals.

How copper ore is concentrated by froth flotation process?

The copper minerals and waste rock are separated at the mill using froth flotation. Air is blown into the tanks and agitated like a giant blender, producing a foamy froth. The chalcopyrite grains become coated with xanthate molecules with their hydrophobic ends waving around trying desperately to get out of the water.

Why is froth flotation one of the most important mineral processing tools in South Africa?

Froth flotation is a traditional mineral beneficiation technique. The froth phase is very important in mineral froth flotation. Its functions include the further concentration of values by allowing the drainage of gangue minerals [2] to hold and transport particles to the concentrate launder [3].

What is the principle of froth flotation process?

If the minerals of interest are hydrophobic in nature, they get attracted to the froth and the impurities are wetted by water. When air is passed through the mixture, the hydrophobic mineral particles are carried with the air bubbles and are floating at the surface, thereby forming a froth which can be removed.

What is the role of activator in froth floatation process?

Copper sulphate acts as an activation in froth floatation process.

How is froth flotation used in mining?

For example, froth flotation is a technique commonly used in the mining industry. In this technique, particles of interest are physically separated from a liquid phase as a result of differences in the ability of air bubbles to selectively adhere to the surface of the particles, based upon their hydrophobicity.

Why is copper undergo froth floatation?

The slurry is placed in a tank and a process called froth floatation is used to separate the copper minerals from the gangue. Chemical reagents called “collectors” are added to the slurry and bind to the copper particles, making them hydrophobic, or waterproof.
