Do you have to answer all the Common App essays?
Write only one essay (plus any supplements). You’ll submit one essay through the Common Application for all your schools. Some colleges may ask you to also answer a few supplemental questions.
Should I do the optional essay for college applications?
You should write the optional essay if you actually have something substantial to say about it. They can smell a weak, insincere, or forced essay from a mile away. Submitting an essay that’s not “real” will hurt you more than simply forgoing the essay at all.

A: The Common App adds efficiency, but use it wisely. Obviously, this is more efficient. Colleges that utilize The Common Application and still have their own institutional application do not put students at a disadvantage.
Does your Common App essay have to be about your major?
It’s definitely OK to write an essay that has nothing to do with your major. Colleges aren’t only interested in what you’ve done to help make your application look good for you major. Writing about sports is a fairly common topic and is often considered a “no no” when it comes to the essay process.
Can you get into college without essay?
Many colleges choose to only require essays for the most competitive programs, such as honors programs, engineering, and nursing, or for scholarships, where additional information may be more instrumental in making decisions. Specific admissions cutoffs and criteria.
How do you explain bad grades on the Common App?
Do not call the admissions offices and offer a verbal explanation. Instead, use the area in the Common Application that offers you space to add information on “[a]nything else you want us to know.” That’s where you want to provide the context for poor grade(s) if the context is not going to be provided by a counselor.

Can my Common App essay be more than 650 words?
There are no strict word limits. We suggest that for the first essay (where you choose one of the seven prompts), the extended essay stay around 650 words. While we won’t as a rule stop reading after 650 words, we cannot promise that an overly wordy essay will hold our attention for as long as you’d hoped it would.
