What documents do I need to drive in Europe after Brexit?

Your Certificate of Motor Insurance. The log book (V5C) for the vehicle. Your driving licence. A GB sticker if your number plate has the Euro symbol; a national flag of England, Scotland or Wales; or letters and numbers with no flag or identifier – but from 28 September 2021, you’ll need a UK sticker instead.

From 1 January 2021, UK nationals who do not fall under the personal scope of and are not covered by the Withdrawal Agreement will have the same status regarding rights of residence as other third country nationals. They can enter and reside in Greece on the basis of the Migration Code or the Free Movement legislation.

Yes, most UK drivers are still able to use their normal driving licence to drive in EU countries. There are some exceptions and what is called an International Driving Permit (IDP) may be needed. An IDP can be bought at Post Offices for £5.50. There is also a 1949 IDP, which covers visits to Andorra, for example.

UK motorists will no longer be required to be in possession of a ‘Green Card’ when driving in France and Spain or other EU countries. The requirement for drivers to obtain the ‘Green Card’ from insurers was previously requirement after the Brexit transition period expired at the start of 2021.
