Can 2 axolotls live in a 20 gallon tank?

Well-known member. Either one will be fine for a pair. Some might argue that 20 gallons is only enough space for one, but axolotls are not very active. As long as you keep up on water changes the 10 gallon would be ok.

How long do you have to wait to put an axolotl in a tank?

It takes about 3 or 4 weeks , you will need a test kit to know when its ready, I would suggest reading about it, it’s very important, it will kill the axolotls, if not done properly. You will need a test kit, but don’t buy the strips, buy one by API, its not terribly expensive and it works good.

What size tank do I need for 2 axolotls?

10 gallons is not large enough for 2 adults Axolotls, you need at LEAST a 20 gallon long for 2, and that’s still on the small side.

Can anything else live with an axolotl?

Axolotls certainly can live with fishes or other freshwater creatures. BUT either one will suffer or die eventually. So it is definitely in your pet axolotl’s best interest to be kept isolated from the other sea creatures or fishes.

What food do axolotls eat?

Axolotls eat worms, insects, small fish, and just about anything else that can fit inside their mouth and swallow whole, including other salamanders. In the lab, axolotls are fed brine shrimp, California blackworms (Lumbriculus varigatus), and salmon pellets.

How big of a tank does a Axolotl need?

To house one or two Axolotls comfortably, a standard 2ft (61cm) tank or larger is appropriate, allowing them room to swim around and exercise. Fine sand should be used to avoid them swallowing pieces of gravel, which leads to digestive issues. Rocks and driftwood can be used inside the tank for hiding places and caves.

How do you acclimate an axolotl to a new tank?

Proper Acclimation Slowly add ¼ cup of water from your cycled aquarium to the container once every 5 minutes for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, use a net to gently remove your axolotl from the container and place it into your aquarium. Do not pour the water from the container back into the aquarium!

Do axolotls need a heater?

You do not need a heater in an Axolotl tank. In warmer climates, you may even need to add a chiller to your tank to keep your water within the optimum temperature range. The ideal temperature for Axolotls is between 60-64° F (16-18° C).

Can ghost shrimp live with axolotls?

I have used ghost shrimp as an occasional treat for my axolotls and they seem to like them. I will leave a few in the tank with my axolotls and they will usually get eaten within a day or so.
