Does upsizing tyres increase ground clearance?

One way is boosting the tyre height by upsizing, while retaining the rims. The other is using taller rims and taller tyres. For instance, going from 185/60 R14 section tyres to say 185/70 R14 section tyres will give you about 10 mm of extra ground clearance, if your car’s design allows for such a change.

What happens when you increase tyre size?

The wider tyres with more traction might reduce the car’s top speed. Acceleration might be affected due to the increase in weight and greater traction. This will affect the vehicle’s fuel economy. If you prefer lighter steering, think twice since you’ll need to put in more steering effort.

Does wheel size affect fuel economy?

For example, larger tires decrease your fuel economy because they are heavier, while smaller tires increase fuel efficiency. Bigger tires also have a higher rolling resistance than smaller tires which means they require more resistance and effort to get them rolling. Tire treads can also impact your fuel economy.

How does tyre size affect fuel consumption?

Wider tyres have more surface area and hence more friction with the tarmac – resulting in higher rolling resistance than the tyres size recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. This means, your car’s engine has to work harder to maintain the cruising speed, which increases fuel consumption.
