What is the space between electron and nucleus?

The empty space between the atomic cloud of an atom and its nucleus is just that: empty space, or vacuum. That’s the simple answer, but there are a few subtleties: 1) Sub-atomic particles such as electrons, protons and neutrons need to be treated as quantum objects.

Why can’t we get electrons closer to the nucleus?

Quantum mechanics states that among all the possible energy levels an electron can sit in the presence of a nucleus, there is one, which has THE MINIMAL energy. This energy level is called the ground state. So, even if atoms are in a very very called environment, QM prohibits electrons from falling to the nucleus.

What causes the electrons distance from the nucleus to change?

Electrons undergo exothermic or endothermic reactions during ground state or excited state. When the electrons move from ground state to excited state, it means that they gain more energy, resulting in higher energy levels (higher energy shells), and this causes the electrons to orbit further from the nucleus.

Will shrinking ever be possible?

Scientists say it’s not really possible to shrink people “at the cellular level” like this, but there are real ways to make humans smaller that could help offset carbon emissions.

How does the spacing change as the energy levels get further from the nucleus?

Unlike a ladder, which has a limited length, the energy levels of an atom extend infinitely out from the nucleus and the energy levels are not evenly spaced. As the distance from the nucleus increases, the levels get closer together and contain more-energetic electrons (Figure 5.4).

Why don t electrons fly off their atoms?

The reason why electrons which are negatively charged, don’t fly off is due to its stronger attraction to the protons. Basically, the positive charge of the proton binds the electron from flying off, since opposites attract. This however, still allows the electrons to move around the nucleus of an atom.

What causes atoms to lose electrons?
