What is it like to go caving?

Generally speaking, caves are cold, dark, wet and muddy places. Girls will be on their hands and knees crawling, climbing, stooping, sliding, belly crawling and walking though a series of wet passages within the cave.

Why is there light in caves?

caves use far-red light and special versions of chlorophyll to generate energy. This type of light comes just before infrared light on the spectrum. Far-red light is reflected by the cave surfaces, reaching areas that visible light does not.

What do you do if you get stuck in a cave?

If you mean stuck as “can’t move” that’s different.

  1. Make sure you stop further entrapment.
  2. If you can’t free yourself and your party can’t free you, try to minimize contact with the rock.
  3. Eat and drink.
  4. If it’s obvious you’re not going to immediately get out, go for help.
  5. Don’t Panic.

Why do people go caving?

Caving is often undertaken for the enjoyment of the outdoor activity or for physical exercise, as well as original exploration, similar to mountaineering or diving. Physical or biological science is also an important goal for some cavers, while others are engaged in cave photography.

What do you wear to a cave?

Because caves are typically cold, you should plan on wearing layers of warm clothes, including long underwear. Cavers should avoid wearing any type of clothing made of cotton because it absorbs and holds more water than synthetic materials and will make you cold more rapidly.

Why do I love caves?

The appeal of caves is, obviously, primal. They offer, in their darkness, both an instant physical reward – shelter – and something more metaphysical. For as many millenniums as there have been humans, caves seem to have been considered a contact zone with the magical, the otherworldly, the irrational, the unconscious.

Are caves dark?

Absolutely. In fact, in the interior of caves it is so dark that if you were to drop your light or run out of batteries, you would not be able to see your own hand in front of your face.

What looks like daylight in a cave?

The group of light-dependent newcomers are known as lamp flora (from the German lampenflora). Young lamp flora typically consists of microscopic algae and cyanobacteria, which collectively form a greenish slime on surfaces illuminated by fake sunlight. With time, mosses and ferns can join the subterranean party.

Can you drink cave water?

Don’t drink cave water. Bring enough water that it will last beyond the estimated length of your expedition. Pack high-energy foods that can survive the tight confines of a cave.

What is dry caving?

When a cave passage is elevated high enough above the water table, the cave floor is usually never saturated with water — this is a terrestrial, or dry cave.

How dangerous is it to go caving?

Caving isn’t particularly dangerous – if you keep some basic rules in mind and set out to be a sensible caver. But it can be dangerous if you don’t prepare well, or if you go off-grid and explore unknown cave tunnels without any backup. As survival expert Ray Mears used to put it:

Is it unnatural to crawl through tiny underground passages?

You’re right people, it’s unnatural to crawl through tiny underground passways. In fact, the most searched query on Google about caving is the number of caving accidents (well, not quite, but close enough). I get it: people are generally risk-averse.

What do people want to know about caving?

The first thing most people want to know when you tell them you’re a caver, is: isn’t that dangerous? You’re right people, it’s unnatural to crawl through tiny underground passways. In fact, the most searched query on Google about caving is the number of caving accidents (well, not quite, but close enough).

What is it like to walk in a cave?

You’ll probably walk more than you might think. Also, you will need to crawl and squeeze through tight spaces every now and then. Caves are tight, so you will get stuck, which is part of the fun. Just relax and breathe (think of it as getting hugged by Mother Earth).
