UFC POSITION CONCERNING REGULATION All UFC bouts are now governed with full adherence to the provisions set forth in the Unified Rules of MMA. UFC continues to support athletic commissions as they work to update and improve upon the Unified Rules of MMA.

The Commission regulates all MMA events including the licensing and supervision of athletes, promoters, trainers, ring-officials, ring-announcers, managers and matchmakers. The Regulations are in place to not only ensure the rules of the sport are enforced but to protect the public and the welfare of athletes.

What is the rule of UFC?

Each championship mixed martial arts contest is to be for 5 rounds, each round no more than 5 minutes duration, with a rest period of 1 minute between each round. All bouts will be evaluated and scored by 3 judges who shall evaluate the contest from different location around the ring/fighting area.

Is UFC banned in some states?

MMA isn’t illegal in any U.S. state. New York just did a pro MMA event that was in the news a few months ago. There are 4 states where mixed martial arts is unregulated by a state athletic commission. They are New York, Connecticut, Montana, and Alaska.

The sport of mixed martial arts was banned in 1997 in New York. At one time the sport was banned in most parts of the United States, which was spearheaded by John McCain who called MMA human cockfighting. New York was the last state to legalize the sport in the United States.
