Why do we have a C8 nerve root?
The C8 spinal nerve allows the brain to send motor controls for muscle movements. The C8 nerve helps control the hands, including finger flexion (handgrip) and the forearm.
Why is there no C8 vertebrae?
The C8 nerve root is atypical because it does not have a corresponding vertebral element and exits below the C7 pedicle and occupies the intervertebral foramen between C7 and T1. In the thoracic and lumbar spine, the nerve roots exit the spinal canal by passing below the pedicle of their named vertebra.
Is there a C8 in the cervical spine?
There are 8 pairs of spinal nerves in the cervical spine, labeled C1 to C8. Each one is named after the vertebra beneath it, except the C8 nerves, which are above the T1 vertebra.
What is C8 Dermatome?
The C8 dermatome is an area of skin that receives sensation through the C8 nerve. This dermatome can vary, but it typically includes areas of skin over parts of the neck, shoulder, forearm, hand, and the little finger. The C8 myotome is a group of muscles controlled by the C8 nerve.
Where is your C8?
The C8 dermatome covers the pinky side of the hand and forearm.
Where is C8 and T1?
C8 and T1 supply the medial antebrachial cutaneous nerve via the medial cord of the brachial plexus, arising between the neck and proximal upper extremity (Fig. 2).
What nerve is C8?
The cervical spinal nerve 8 (C8) is a spinal nerve of the cervical segment. It originates from the spinal column from below the cervical vertebra 7 (C7)….Cervical spinal nerve 8.

What is innervated by C8?
The abductor and flexor pollicis brevis, opponens pollicis, and lateral two lumbricals are innervated by C8–T1 via the median nerve, entering the hand through the carpal tunnel.
How common is C8 radiculopathy?
BACKGROUND CONTEXT: C8 radiculopathies are uncommon accounting up to 6\% of cervical radiculopathies. Surgical management for C8 radiculopathy is also uncommon with studies limited to case series. EMGs are frequently used to discern between peripheral nerve and cervical nerve root compression.
What is a C8 spinal cord injury?
A C8 spinal cord injury refers to damage at the nerve roots between the C7 and T1 vertebrae. While individuals with C8 spinal cord injuries generally can control movement in their arms, they may experience weakness and loss of sensation in the hands, trunk, and lower body.
Is C8 same as T1?
Overlapping with the T1 root, the C8 root innervates the finger flexors and all the intrinsic hand muscles [2], [3]. The sensory innervation zone of C8 is the ulnar two digits and the medial aspect of the forearm.
What does C8 and T1 innervate?
