Is First Sergeant the same as Master Sergeant?

While first sergeant is equal in paygrade to master sergeant (MSG), the two ranks have different responsibilities. A first sergeant is generally senior to a master sergeant in leadership matters, though a master sergeant may have more general military authority such as when in charge of a military police (MP) section.

Master Sergeant (MSG) is the eighth enlisted grade (E-8), ranking above sergeant first class and below sergeant major, command sergeant major, Sergeant Major of the Army, and equal in grade but not authority to a first sergeant.

So both Master Sergeant and First Sergeant are the same pay grade which is E8, however First Sergeant is senior to and outranks Master Sergeant. Whats the difference between CSM and SGM?

Both a SGM and a CSM are paygrade E9, but a CSM fills specific key positions. It is a lateral transfer between the two ranks; you would be appointed as a CSM to fill a given specific slot and could be returned to SGM once that tour of duty was up.

What is unique about the E 8 and E 9 levels?

In the top-level enlisted ranks, there is an even more significant increase in leadership responsibility. As a whole, ranks E-8 and E-9 have between 15 and 30 years on the job and are usually the commanders’ senior advisers for enlisted matters.

Master Sergeant (MSG) Sergeants Major are non-commissioned officers (NCO’s) in the United States Army. They are the highest-ranking enlisted soldiers in the military. Their expertise and competence, both technically and tactically, is matched only by other Sergeants Major.

It is the highest enlisted rank, just above first sergeant and master sergeant, with a pay grade of E–9, NATO rank OR–9. The leadership variation – command sergeant major (CSM) – is the senior enlisted advisor to the commanding officer.
