Do graphite and diamond have different melting points?

Graphite has a melting point similar to that of diamond of around 3600°C, at which point it sublimes rather than melting.

Why does graphite have high melting point?

However, graphite still has a very high melting and boiling point because the strong covalent bonds that hold the carbon atoms together in the layers require a lot of heat energy to break.

Graphite can conduct electricity because of the delocalised (free) electrons in its structure. However, in diamond, all 4 outer electrons on each carbon atom are used in covalent bonding, so there are no delocalised electrons.

Like carbon dioxide it goes directly from the solid state to the gaseous. So graphite has no melting point until you get up to about 100 atmospheres.
