Why do the prophets want to activate Halo?

The prophets were the only ones in the covenant who knew the true purpose of the halo rings. They knew that the rings would not allow them to ascend into godhood, which was what they told the rest of the covenant.

What happens when Halo is activated?

When activated, the Halo rings would wipe out all sentient life within three radii of the Milky Way’s Galactic center, by sending out radiation, targeting certain cells in the nervous system, which includes, but is not limited to, neurons, by harmonizing all neurological frequencies.
