What is Hong Kong issue?

On 28 May 2020, China’s National People’s Congress approved the controversial national security laws for Hong Kong, which aim at cracking down protests and ban “any acts or activities” that the communist government considers to endanger China’s national security.

Do Hong Kongers want independence?

According to a survey conducted by the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute in December 2019, one-fifth of Hong Kong’s population supported Hong Kong independence, while 56\% of Hongkongers opposed it.

Why were there protests in Hong Kong 2014?

The protests began after the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPCSC) issued a decision regarding proposed reforms to the Hong Kong electoral system.

Why are there massive protests in Hong Kong?

Protests over a separate bill , which would have allowed suspects in Hong Kong to be extradited to mainland China, evolved into a mass pro-democracy, anti-government movement that lasted more than six months. Demonstrations often grew violent, with near-weekly clashes between protesters and police, who deployed tear gas and water cannons.

Yes, Hong Kong has a type of democracy. But it doesn’t have universal suffrage, a basic tenet of a democracy. Hong Kong has its own mini parliament in the form of LEGCO , short for the Legislative Council. Representatives in LEGCO are either elected by direct election or by electoral college.
