How does a VW distributor work?
Distributor. The distributor takes the the power from the coil, and distributes it into each spark plug (4) through and additional four HT leads. The remaining four are outputs and will each be connected to the spark plug (4) for each cylinder. The firing order of a VW type 1 engine is 1–4–3–2.
How do you install a distributor in a car?
Installing a new distributor can be done in a few simple steps:
- Set the engine to top dead center (TDC)
- Mark and remove the old distributor.
- Install the new distributor.
- Set the base ignition timing.
- Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt.
How do you know if you have a bad distributor point?
If points are bad, the engine could experience multiple problems. Bad point connections cause engine overrun, timing issues, speed missing and causes the engine to misfire or fail to start. Look closely at the surface of contact points. Check for corrosion or degradation.
What does a condenser in a distributor do?
Basically the function of a condenser in a coil ignition circuit is to reduce the spark at the contact points as they open in the distributor and thus minimise burning and pitting of the points.
How much horsepower does a 1600cc VW engine have?
Growing displacement over time VW later boosted the 1,200cc engine to 40 horsepower. In the 1960s, VW went through 1,300cc and 1,500cc transition models before coming to the 1,600cc single intake port design, and then the 1,600cc dual port design at 60 horsepower, that lasted through the end of production.
How do you install a new distributor clamp?
Slide the distributor clamp onto your new distributor. Now, install the distributor o-ring onto the distributor (if you put the o-ring on before the clamp, you will find out why I’m telling you to put the clamp on first! ) Look into the distributor hole in the engine, and see how the drive notch is lined up.
How do you remove the distributor from the rotor?
It may take some light tapping on the rim of the distributor to get the o-ring started into the case. Slide it all the way down, and it should bottom out on the clamp. If it does not, the drive gear is not properly engauged. You need to rotate the rotor back and forth while GENTLY pushing the distributor down.
Do I need a distributor for my engine?
You are either in one of two situations; your engine runs, and you need/want to replace it, or your engine does not have a distributor installed and you need to put one in. We’ll start with an engine that does not have a distributor in it.
