With OCD, the compulsive behavior is directly related to the excessive thought. For example, someone who counts their money every hour may have an obsessive fear someone will steal it or they will lose it.

Can you develop OCD on your own?

There are numerous things that can cause OCD, including genetics, your surroundings and things that can randomly happen in everyday life. If a close relative has OCD, studies have shown there could be a series of genes that you inherit, making OCD partially genetic.

What can cause OCD to develop?

Causes

  • Biology. OCD may be a result of changes in your body’s own natural chemistry or brain functions.
  • Genetics. OCD may have a genetic component, but specific genes have yet to be identified.
  • Learning. Obsessive fears and compulsive behaviors can be learned from watching family members or gradually learned over time.

How do you stop overthinking when you have OCD?

Attend to the intrusive thoughts; accept them and allow them in, then allow them to move on. Don’t fear the thoughts; thoughts are just that—thoughts. Don’t let them become more than that. Take intrusive thoughts less personally, and let go of your emotional reaction to them.

Can you develop OCD in your 20s?

OCD can start at any time from preschool to adulthood. Although OCD does occur at earlier ages, there are generally two age ranges when OCD first appears: Between ages 10 and 12 and between the late teens and early adulthood. It typically starts between 18 and 25 but can begin anytime.

Can intrusive thoughts be triggered?

Intrusive thoughts are often triggered by stress or anxiety. They may also be a short-term problem brought on by biological factors, such as hormone shifts. For example, a woman might experience an uptick in intrusive thoughts after the birth of a child.

Illness anxiety disorder, sometimes called hypochondriasis or health anxiety, is worrying excessively that you are or may become seriously ill.

Will intrusive thoughts go away?

Mundane thoughts leave, but intrusive thoughts last longer and often return. In some cases, intrusive thoughts are the result of an underlying mental health condition, like OCD or PTSD. These thoughts could also be a symptom of another health issue, such as: a brain injury.
