How many seats are for general category?

This seems to be one of the big issues in this election. Now, a general category candidate has to compete only in 40.50 per cent seats as 59.50 per cent seats are reserved.

What is general and OBC caste?

General category refers to the open and unreserved categories while OBC or other backward classes refer to the castes which come under centre list of National commission of backward classes. OBC categories are further divided into creamy layer and non creamy layer based on income.

Can I change my caste from OBC to SC?

Yes, it can be done by Court intervention after the Court issues directions to the concerned Authorities. You will have to file a writ petition in the High Court within whose jurisdiction you fall.

The exact percentages vary from state to state: In Tamil Nadu, the reservation is 18\% for SCs and 1\% for STs, based on local demographics. In Northeast India, especially in Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram, reservation for ST in State Govt. jobs is 80\% with only 20\% unreserved.

Can a SC/ST/OBC person have a claim on 50\% reserved seats?

Such claims state that 50\% of all seats are completely “reserved” for the general category, and no SC/ST/OBC person can have a claim on such seats, even on the basis of merit. However, the actual judgment does not imply anything of this sort.
