Did the US occupy West Berlin?

In 1945, the United States, Great Britain, and France had assumed the occupation of the western portion of Germany (as well as the western half of Berlin, situated in eastern Germany). All that remained was for the Americans, British, and French to end their nearly 10-year occupation.

Why was Berlin split into 4 zones?

After World War II, defeated Germany was divided into Soviet, American, British and French zones of occupation. After a massive Allied airlift in June 1948 foiled a Soviet attempt to blockade West Berlin, the eastern section was drawn even more tightly into the Soviet fold.
