Does improved pact weapon require ammo?
It does require ammunition. It does not generate its own ammunition. You don’t know what fear is until you’ve witnessed a drunk bird divebombing you while carrying a screaming Kobold throwing fire anywhere and everywhere.
How does improved pact weapon work?
A nonmagical weapon you touch becomes a magic weapon. The Improved Pact Weapon invocation does not grant a +1 bonus to attack and damage if the weapon “is a magic weapon that already has a bonus to those rolls”. As soon as Elemental Weapon is cast the damage and hit bonuses provided by Improved Pact Weapon end.

Yes, you can use the Hex Warrior feature with those one-handed ranged weapons. Once you take Pact of the Blade you still have a problem, in that the summoned weapon must be melee – so not a pistol/crossbow.

The description of the Improved Pact Weapon eldritch invocation (XGtE, p. 57) includes the following: Finally, the weapon you conjure can be a shortbow, longbow, light crossbow, or heavy crossbow.
Does pact of the Blade have to be a melee weapon?
You need the Improved Pact Weapon invocation, otherwise the Pact Blade is limited to melee weapons.
Which pact boon is best?
Pact of the Talisman is the simplest Pact Boon, requiring no actions on the part of the warlock and requiring little further investment to make the talisman useful. If you want to focus on other parts of the Warlock and Pact Boon holds little appeal for you, Pact of the Talisman is a great choice.
Can my pact weapon be ranged?
Yes, but you have to be level 12 to do this This takes care of the ranged pact weapon, and allows the use of both Thirsting Blade and Lifedrinker with a ranged weapon.
Can you use a greatsword as a pact weapon?
Yes, you can turn a greatsword into your pact weapon with the Pact of the Blade feature as the benefit extends to every pact weapon you conjure with that feature, no matter the weapon’s type, which can include two-handed weapons.
