Why electrical continuity between flanges?

All flanged joints in the pipework should maintain electrical continuity across them, to reduce the chance of arc-over within the pipe. Particular attention should be given to areas where rubber or plastic is inserted for antivibration purposes, and where sight glasses are positioned in pipelines.

How is electrical continuity maintained at pipeline flanged joints?

As per section 8.4. 1.2, continuity can be maintained by using a conductive gasket, such as a flexible, graphite filled, spiral wound gasket, or by installing a jumper wire across the joint.

What is the purpose of a flange?

Flanges are used to connect pipes with each other, to valves, to fittings, and to specialty items such as strainers and pressure vessels. A cover plate can be connected to create a “blind flange”. Flanges are joined by bolting, and sealing is often completed with the use of gaskets or other methods.

What piping specification is widely used for natural gas pipelines?

Polyethylene (PE) gas piping is the most widely used plastic piping material for the distribution of natural gas.

What is flange coupling?

Flange coupling involves bringing the two tube ends together in a flush, sealed manner. The two-piece coupling unit consists of a keyed receiving side for the flanged end to be fastened. A flange coupling is useful in pressurizing the piping systems where tubing ends or two pipes need to come together.

What is flanged valve?

A flange valve connection is a type of connection that uses a gasket between the flanges of a valve and pipe to seal the joint. It is secured with bolts, and if installed correctly, flange connections create a fluid-tight seal. Producers typically use flange valve connections on valves 3″ and larger.

Why is it necessary to use a gasket in a flanged joint?

Flange gaskets are used to create a static seal between two flanges faces, at various operating conditions, with varied pressure and temperature ratings. A gaskets fills the microscopic spaces and irregularities of the flange faces, and then it forms a seal that is designed to keep liquids and gases.

What is a flange valve?

A flange valve connection is a type of connection that uses a gasket between the flanges of a valve and pipe to seal the joint. It is secured with bolts, and if installed correctly, flange connections create a fluid-tight seal.

How do flanges work?

A flange is a method of connecting pipes, valves, pumps and other equipment to form a piping system. It also provides easy access for cleaning, inspection or modification. Flanges are usually welded or screwed. Flanged joints are made by bolting together two flanges with a gasket between them to provide a seal.

What is PNG in gas?

LPG is Liquefied Petroleum Gas and PNG is Piped Natural Gas. LPG is supplied in liquid form just as the name suggests in cylinders whereas PNG is supplied through a pipeline. LPG is used as a fuel in heating appliances and vehicles, where as PNG is used for cooking (gas stoves) and heating water (gas geysers).

What is black steel?

Black steel is made of steel that has not been galvanized. Its name comes from the scaly, dark-colored iron oxide coating on its surface. Since it has a dark color surface that is form by iron oxide during the manufacturing process, it is called black steel pipe.

Why do we use flange coupling?

A flange coupling meant to bring two tube ends together in a flush, sealed manner. Flange couplings are typically used in pressurized piping systems where two pipe or tubing ends have to come together.

What is the difference between a flange and a gasket?

A flange joint is a plate or ring to form a rim at the end of a pipe when fastened to the pipe. Gaskets are made as per by construction, materials and features. Important gaskets used are non- metallic, spiral-wound and ring-joint type (Fig. 5.10). Union When two ends of pipes are joined, the pipe fitting used is called union.

What is the difference between a valve and a fitting?

Unlike fittings, each valve and strainer has a known flow coefficient, which is used to calculate the pressure drop (P) it causes when in the fully open position. Flow rate (G). Expressed in gallons per minutes, the greater the flow rate the more pressure will be lost through the valve or strainer. Valve flow coefficient (Cv).

What is the function of fittings in plumbing system?

Fittings are fixed in the plumbing system to join straight pipes or any section of tubes. We can say that the water-supply fittings like elbow, tee, socket, reducer, etc., are fitted to change the direction of flow, distribute the water supply from the main pipe to other pipes of equal size or lower size, etc.

What are the advantages of CPVC fittings?

Another advantage of CPVC is that the inside diameter of its fittings matches the diameter of the pipe. In some other materials, the fitting inserted into the pipe is slightly narrower, creating an additional disruption to the flow and increased pressure loss at each fitting. The CPVC solvent cement joining process is simple and straightforward.
