How much should you stretch guitar strings?

Usually, it takes about 2-3 passes per string before it fully stabilizes and no longer goes significantly flat. I say “significantly” because your string may go just a little flat anytime you yank on it this much.

Why do you need to stretch guitar strings?

It helps if your strings are neatly wound on their machine head posts (See the closeup photo below). It’s also important that new guitar strings are properly stretched to allow them to settle.

Are electric guitar strings looser than acoustic?

Electric guitar strings are supposed to be much looser than those of an acoustic. That’s because the strings tend to be thinner, and the action is considerably lower. If you think that your electric’s strings are uncomfortably loose, there are steps you can take to help them feel tighter.

Quality strings do not require stretching, and when an attempt is made to stretch them, they return to the original pitch when released. Strings that stretch are not made of the proper string material known as spring steel or a facsimile thereof.

Why is it so hard to break in New Strings?

A new string’s elasticity makes it almost impossible to maintain a stable tuning. Most players attempt to “break in” the strings by playing a lot, then re-tuning, then playing some more, then re-tuning, and repeating those two steps until the strings stay put. It’s a pain in the neck.

How do you stop a guitar string from breaking?

Stretching the strings out like this can also can help prevent them from breaking. Strings generally break at their weakest points, almost always where the string’s tension is uneven. Stretching the string helps to spread the tension out over the whole string, decreasing the number of weak spots.

Why does my guitar go out of tune after tuning?

Once the the new strings are on and the guitar is tuned up, the strings immediately go out of tune after strumming once or twice. A new string’s elasticity makes it almost impossible to maintain a stable tuning.
