How does the satellite navigation work?

Satellite Navigation is based on a global network of satellites that transmit radio signals from medium earth orbit. To accomplish this, each of the 31 satellites emits signals that enable receivers through a combination of signals from at least four satellites, to determine their location and time.

How does a GPS transmit information?

GPS uses a lot of complex technology, but the concept is simple. The GPS receiver gets a signal from each GPS satellite. The satellites transmit the exact time the signals are sent. By subtracting the time the signal was transmitted from the time it was received, the GPS can tell how far it is from each satellite.

How does GPS work in simple terms?

How GPS works. GPS satellites circle the Earth twice a day in a precise orbit. Each satellite transmits a unique signal and orbital parameters that allow GPS devices to decode and compute the precise location of the satellite. GPS receivers use this information and trilateration to calculate a user’s exact location.

How many satellites does it take to navigate the Earth?

The best-known satnav system, the Navstar Global Positioning System (GPS), uses about 24 active satellites (including backups). Day and night, 365 days a year, they whiz round Earth once every 12 hours on orbital planes inclined at 55 degrees to the equator.

How does a satellite signal determine the travel time?

The satellite signals include a pulse code that enables the receiver to determine travel time, as well as information on satellite positions and current time. A minimum of four satellite signals are needed to determine position and time, but accurate solutions typically use eight or more satellites as shown in Fig. 4.
