What happened to TomTom navigation?

TomTom, the Dutch online mapping company known for its car-based GPS systems, sold its telematics (fleet management) division to tire-maker Bridgestone for a whopping $1.03B.

Is TomTom or Garmin better?

First, it’s more accurate than Garmin’s, at least in our anecdotal testing across several reviews. But while HD traffic costs extra, TomTom often throws in a year for free, and the regular real-time service also does a good job. Another bonus: TomTom devices also don’t display ads as a rule, unlike Garmin’s.

How does Garmin GPS work?

Garmin Global Positioning System receivers work by using GPS satellites that orbit the Earth. These satellites circle the Earth twice each day and transmit signals back. The Garmin GPS receiver picks up the satellite signals and uses them to triangulate the user’s location through a process called trilateration.

Which is easier to use TomTom or Garmin?

Garmin DriveLuxe 51 LMT-D It’s more responsive than the TomTom and the address inputs were the easiest on test. The Garmin picked ideal routes, but didn’t provide as many traffic-jam alerts as the TomTom, and its time of arrival wasn’t quite as accurate, either.

Is TomTom better than Garmin Streetpilot?

Another plus point is that the TomTom devices (TomTom GO 9000) also do not show much of ads as compared to the Garmin’s. TomTom is also making some ground on its phone app as well, finally. The TomTom’s iOS GPS app is much ahead of the Garmin StreetPilot app in its features and overall user performance.

Both the professional and the public reviewers of these device brands always state that Garmin devices are more towards the easy-to-read graphics and icons, while The TomTom devices display more information, like more names of ambient streets.

Apparently, we’re not alone: In July, the New York Times noted that “TomTom’s stand-alone GPS business is growing… as customers look for ways to avoid smartphone and data roaming charges when they cross international borders.” That may be, but things didn’t work out that way for us.

Using a feature called ‘Smartphone Link’, Garmin lets you connect with your phone to download map data via related apps, to provide you with live services. Most latest TomTom devices have inbuilt connectivity with apps like Yelp, TripAdvisor, and Expedia for points of interest.
