Originally Answered: Why was Morgoth afraid to fight Fingolfin in Silmarillion? Morgoth, the Dark Lord, was afraid because he had tied himself to Arda and to Middle Earth. He had tied himself to Middle Earth by spreading his essence into the corruption of Middle Earth (This is similar to what Sauron did with the Ring).
What was Melkor the Vala of?
Manwë Súlimo the King of the Winds, and the King of the Valar, and husband of Varda. Melkor (Morgoth Bauglir) the First Dark Lord, was the strongest Vala before he was banished from the group. Aulë the Smith, and the Lord of Earth and all that’s underneath, and the husband of Yavanna.
How was Melkor defeated?
The Valar waged devastating war on Melkor, and destroyed Utumno. Melkor was defeated by the Vala Tulkas, bound with a specially forged chain, Angainor, and brought to Valinor, where he was imprisoned in the Halls of Mandos for three ages.

In some of Tolkien’s early writings which eventually became the Silmarillion (The Lost Tales), Ainur and Maiar had children, a number of which he named. Eventually he dropped this idea and had them all more or less not be child-bearing (we don’t really know if they were celibate or not).
