Will there ever be planes without pilots?
Reliable Robotics and Xwing are two Bay Area start-ups working on planes that can fly themselves — no pilot required. Rather than building new aircraft, both companies have retrofitted Cessna Grand Caravans. The planes can fly autonomously while a remote operator monitors the flight, taking control if needed.
Will we need pilots in 20 years?
Boeing Co.’s Pilot and Technician Outlook 2021–2040 lowered predicted pilot hiring numbers by 20 percent since 2020—down to 612,000 from 763,000 forecast in 2020—but the aerospace firm says long-term demand for pilots and aviation personnel “remains strong” despite an “uneven global recovery” from the coronavirus …
Will planes become automated?
In December of 2020, drone company American Robotics won FAA approval for some of their fully automated drones. Developed by a Massachusetts-based company, these commercial drones will be used to deliver stuff without human input of any kind during flight.

Expect to see a big push back by the pilot unions.
Will autopilot jobs ever be fully automated?
Pilot jobs will likely never become fully automated. While much of the controlling of the aircraft can be taken over by an autopilot, the need for a human at or near the controls will likely remain for quite some time.

There are also many situations in which a human can make better decisions than a machine can.
Will the plane ever fly itself?
The plane will fly itself, yes. Just like above. There will always be a pilot on board to solve and deal with that which the computer cannot. It will be redundancy – something extremely common in the aviation industry. Pilot see’s an animal on the runway and the plane doesn’t? Cool, the pilot does a go around and saves tons of money.
