Can all dried corn be popped?

Nope. The corn at your local grocery is called sweet corn, and it won’t pop. Neither will field corn, the type used in foods such as tortilla chips. Only the kernels from popcorn cobs will pop.

Why does sweetcorn not pop?

Sweetcorn varieties do not have the right type of shell around each kernel to transform into popped corn. What is this? Additionally, the corn kernel as a whole needs the right amount of moisture. Excess moisture or too little of it could prevent the corn from popping.

Do humans eat field corn?

People don’t eat field corn directly from the field because it’s hard and certainly not sweet. Instead, field corn must go through a mill and be converted to food products and ingredients like corn syrup, corn flakes, yellow corn chips, corn starch or corn flour.

Is there anything else you can pop like popcorn?

Although popcorn is usually the movie night snack of choice, corn is not the only whole grain you can pop. Yep, that’s right people. Ancient grains like amaranth, barley, buckwheat, quinoa and sorghum can all be popped and enjoyed as popcorn alternatives.

Can other grains be popped?

Quinoa, sorghum, and amaranth are some of the most easily popped and puffed, but once you get those down pat, branch out and try other grains and seeds. They may not puff up as dramatically as corn or sorghum, but they’ll take on a nutty, toasted taste.

Why won’t my popcorn pop?

The 2 reasons your popcorn won’t pop. If you can dent the kernel with your nail it’s still way too wet to pop. If the kernel is very hard and can’t be dented but doesn’t pop, it probably needs moisture added into it. You need to either dry it out more or put it in a jar and add a bit of water. It’s really as basic as that.

Are popped seeds and grains just as good as popped corn?

Not all popped seeds and grains will have the same magical outcome as popped corn with its soft, airy shell, but many of them will be just as delicious, whether eaten out of hand or used as an ingredient in your kitchen.

Is it possible for a kernel to pop without cracking?

If the kernel doesn’t have enough moisture inside of it or if the shell of the kernel is permeable enough to allow the pressure inside the kernel to dissipate before it reaches the critical pop pressure, then that kernel won’t pop. Ever. So to answer your question, no.
